Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common functional disorder of the digestive system and the gut.  It is a long-term condition and is thought to affect one in five people in their lifetime.  The condition often causes recurring pain or discomfort in the abdomen.  Other symptoms include indigestion, diarrhoea, constipation and feeling full.

The exact cause of IBS is unclear, some research suggests it may be due to over-activity of the gut or as a result of stressful experiences.

Hypnotherapy for IBS can help an individual learn relaxation techniques, as well as learning new ways of managing stress. Hypnosis can help promote, positive thinking and develop coping strategies to manage feelings of stress.

Hypnotherapy for IBS is now recognised as a clinically effective treatment by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
